 A few bewares

We are often asked about the validity of labels found on feed bags and the soundness of advice from “experts and others interested in your money”. So here are a few Bewares -

Beware the person who tells you to cut out all the supplements you are feeding. Often that person does not actually own a horse and if they do we hope their horse never gets arthritis.

Beware the word “Contains all the horse needs” when written on the feed bag. It does not mean that all you need to do is feed the food to get the correct daily nutritional balance. It only means that all the nutrients in the feed are needed by the horse.

Beware the person who picks up the details of one of your feeds and tells you that the percentage of protein is too high. Remember there is more protein in 5 oz of bran than 2 oz of linseed.

Beware the advisor that says “Well on one hand you could do such and such but then on the other hand you could……. .  Perhaps it would be better to seek out a one armed person when you really want to know what to do.

Beware the insincere, talk first of your donkey then only if the person is still there speak of your string of racehorses.
