 FEEDLINE……………AUG-SEPT 2007   No 48

Maglyte has all the advantages of efficiency and cost however there are circumstances that make using Trinity Magfluid preferable. This is when only a small amount of bucket feed is being offered, especially if it is in nut form, making it difficult to include powder or when syringing is a better option. It is quick acting and at £25 Nett for 2 Litres is not as costly as some imported Mg liquids.

In 1981 a veneer manufacturer and forester by the name of Robert Schindele bought a tract of forest in lower Austria and that autumn set about making a forest road to enable him to clear the trees dying of acid rain. To facilitate this he quarried into a nearby area of volcanic rock that had come with the purchase. The first unusual thing to happen was when the caterpillar tractor operator complained that his crawler’s tracks were working loose and he had even had to take out links to tighten them, this had not even happened to Rommel in the western desert, so why was it happening to his machine! It was later found that because of their peculiar cobalt & iron content the minerals were becoming highly magnetic by friction. The molecules of the chain links and the bolts at the friction surface were in the same direction, the transformation of the atomic crystal lattice in the Stoneflour meant that even the hardest steel dissolved, layer by layer.* Then in the spring the trees adjacent to the road that had been marked for felling started to sprout bright new green needles and for 50 metres either side of the road that had been covered with dust an abundance of forest grass started to grow which attracted deer and other animals. Robert Schindele started to think that the stone he was pulverizing was having some sort of revitalizing effect on the dying woods. Word got about and then an article appeared speculating that a remedy had been found for the effect of acid rain and damage commonly believed to be happening as a result of the massive cold war early warning systems in the area. The Stoneflour was duly analysed and found to be totally unique containing as many as 26 different minerals. It was at this point that Robert Schindele decided about consuming the material himself, if the Stoneflour was so good for the trees ands plants it would have to be good for him, for he was constantly ill with what was described as meat poisoning (inflammatory arthritis) and other problems. He took a spoonful with water and for the next three days had violent evacuations and his stools turned black. He took another spoonful per day and suddenly started to feel much better, he had more energy, he was happier and the pain was subsiding. In a week he really knew that the Stoneflour was making a difference to him and the rest as they say ‘is history’ -  Television interviews, newspaper articles, queues of cars blocking the road into the town of  Kicking,  hundreds of testimonials were reported and a thousand letters a day poured in requesting the Schindele’s wonderful Stoneflour. Gold medals for service and achievement were awarded and even regular deliveries were made to the White house in the US. Then there was a problem. Despite endorsement by leading doctors, food scientists and luminaries the German Government alarmed by the medical claims being made in the press decided to ban the sale of the Stoneflour in Germany. The wonder crystals had not undergone the necessary testing to be a medical product and what was being claimed was against the law. It was of course argued that it was the peculiar mineral balance of Schindele’s Stoneflour that was having such a health giving effect and it was not a drug but a food and in no way toxic or harmful. This was accepted but it was the way in which the Stoneflour was publicised that was the sticking point and it was cleared from the shelves of chemists and all shops.

The effect of the ban in the country where it was most popular was devastating and such was the investment made in production things looked bad, however after sometime it was agreed that the Stoneflour could be sold but with no claims whatever, indeed except for alluding to its consumption with water or milk no reason for taking the powder would be made not even on the tin. Providing that was the case the Stoneflour could again be sold in Germany. To run any business without the oxygen of publicity is a drawback but to not say what your product is for is downright difficult, nevertheless Schindele’s Mineralalien is now taken by thousands of people every day in nearly every county in the world. Anecdotal evidence on the benefits of the Stoneflour to horses and other animals prompted BP Nutrition (at the time the world’s largest feed company) to undertake evaluation of the Stoneflour and a visit to Austria was planned but a temporary down turn in the fortunes of British Petroleum resulted in the announced sale of Purina and their European animal feed interests, so the project was never undertaken however several years later, prompted by the late Will Headdon , Trinity Consultants embarked on trials with Stoneflour for horses.  In contrast to the extensive BP Nutrition plan the trial involved purchasing a few kilos and feeding it to horses and almost from the first few mouthfuls fed it was obvious there was much potential. The Stoneflour is now very much part of many Trinity formulae, especially the Tenderfoot formulations, we have found it to be not only valuable in its own right but we can increase its effectiveness by the addition of other ingredients and in turn the Stoneflour returns the favour by increasing the effectiveness of the ingredients we add.

Note to Jersey Clients - because of the wet summer good hay is going to be hard to find from the UK and a lot of French hay may only be from a light second cut as so much of their mown hay had to be abandoned, so except for the limited amount of home made haylage we will be looking at even higher forage prices than usual this winter. To help offset this we have arranged convenient storage of OB pellets on the Island so single horse owners and smaller concerns can have a ready supply. Larger horse units that import tonnes at a time will already know the benefits of this unique hay replacer. As they take up less room on the ferries and do not have to be covered separately during transit unlike forage shipments the cost of shipping is less so they may this winter be actually cheaper than hay itself for the first time, approx £7 per 25kg bag. They can replace forage entirely or a good part of it, the horses like them and always do well on them especially older ponies. For details please ring our Jersey numbers 863495 or 07797 766 318.

One silver lining to such a wet summer is that overall pollen counts have been lower and breathing problems have been less this year. We have though, still been regularly making up AH181 and Zephyrex PD Strong for respiratory problems. The former is for allergic reactions to pollen and dust and the latter for coughs and congestion. When necessary Arun Powder (Bamboo Gum) can be fed with the AH181 to help support immunity and help membrane elasticity, topdress Arun powder on to each bucket feed immediately before feeding, it raises dietary available silica and can be very useful but start with AH181 on its own first and then review.

When sheep with laminitis were offered sheep nuts that included Sodium Bicarbonate in them they unerringly chose them in preference to those without. They even did so with the bicarb as low as 1% inclusion showing that they will try to seek out a digestive if the need is there. The recent popularity of feeding Magnesium Oxide (Calcined magnesite) to footy horses may not be entirely disconnected with this and may hold an answer to the current augment between established nutritional findings and podiatrists and farriers over Mg levels.  National Research Council (NRC) states that levels of 9 to 12g/day and/or 3 parts of Ca to one part of Mg is sufficient yet some practical therapists are encouraging clients to feed twice such levels or more and apart from some aggravated scour problems, if the horses eat such levels, there is no harm. Who is right? Well both maybe but the therapists may be right for the wrong reason by overlooking the fact that Calcined Magnesite is a very good buffer indeed superior to Limestone flour for its acid quenching ability, a material which used to be put forward for Laminitis and is favoured in parts of Wales as a remedy for tying up. It is no coincidence that Founderfrei and Tenderfoot 2 include both Bicarb and MgO and other ingredients that all have a pronounced buffering effect.

Please note that the Aloe Vera we use in our formulations is entirely the gel as is most of the Aloe Vera you purchase. Buyers of Aloe Vera from Network and Pyramid sellers are often told that their product is better, more efficient etc because of the unique way they are able to exclusively extract the gel. They may do, but so do others, it is a routine process. The Aloe Vera leaf has three layers, a thick outer skin, an inner lining and a central pulp of gel-containing cells. The inner lining has a bitter yellow juice that has a strong laxative effect. The gel of the leaf is used both topically and internally for its wound healing and antibiotic properties. The Greeks and Ancient Egyptians knew of is therapeutic properties and in Ayurveda it is referred to as Kumari which can be translated as ‘the vitality of youth’.

The mineral requirements of the horse are not absolute and guidelines such as we have are just that, and not to be considered as life or death. Genghis Khan did not conquer half the known world with his ponies knowing the guidelines and the Pony Express Company, the Cossacks, and all the armies of the world that used horses did not have them either. That’s not to infer they are not at all useful but they must not be taken as so absolute as to be the only key to making everything better or that lack of observance is some form of neglect as those people with an axe to grind sometimes may imply. Surveying various guidelines published throughout the world (one of the boring things we do) reveals variations but one thing they have in common is that recommendations for adult horses usually adhere to the allocation of 66% of the daily requirements for maintenance and 33% for performance and the requirement for protein which is essential and integral for the assimilation and utilisation of minerals is likewise. If not just laid off on good grazing, the policy of feeding a bucket feed twice a day for leisure horses and three times a day if work increases is a sound one & a third distinct feed when horses start to do more work, particularly that involving higher heart beat is superior to just feeding more concentrated feed twice a day.

A complete answer to Head Shaking still eludes us so to try to stop it we encourage clients to explore all avenues and theories put forward to help and try those proprietary supplements that claim success. The best we have come up with so far is feeding Trinity Magfluid at 50 to 75ml per day and 2 teaspoonfuls Tulsi extract (Ocimum sanctum). It certainly helps and may prevent the problem becoming embedded if used early enough.

Clients occasionally ask us for cold drawn Castor oil (Palma Christi) for topical use on horses with skin problems and for themselves as a hot pack for the relief of sciatica and arthritic pains. As with Noof, Castor oil affects a trigger mechanism to immune system T-Cells in the skin causing them to activate a local immune system reaction through the Lymphatic system. It is a biochemical precursor of prostaglandins and raises the vitality of cells that it comes in contact with. It took a little while to locate the quality of Castor which is needed but we do have some should it be required.

Trinity Consultants remembered its founder partner, Will, who died in November, by sponsoring a Grand Prix competition for BSJA Jersey on July 21st.  Will, who had been suffering with cancer for three years, had been the Chairman of BSJA Jersey and a longstanding member, not only assisting course building but supporting his daughters within the sport for 25 years. The course was built by Will's longstanding friend & BSJA Chairman, Dave Robinson, and the course was a substantial 1.35m in the second round, there was only one double clear round.  'Will would have enjoyed the jumping today immensely, the competition being won on jumping ability & scope and not solely on speed against the clock', commented Dave.    Trinity Consultants has offered to present the class annually and the trophy which originally belonged to Will has been donated by his family to the BSJA as a perpetual trophy. For those that need them, the help L’Essence De Vie Capsules give can be likened to the days after midwinter. To start with the days are only imperceptibly longer but then after a few weeks you realise the difference. Cease taking them and you can liken them to the days after midsummer at first there seems is no difference and you wonder why you took them then after a little while you notice the nights drawing in.
