Microscopic faecal evaluation

Microscopic evaluations are only done if require by Roger where they might assist in the diagnosis of a problem.

Initially we looked at the possibility in 1997 of examining faecal debris to try to evaluate the effects of nutritional changes. After about a year of doing these evaluations we found that correlations between certain physical aspects provided information that allowed us to find early changes in gut function that lead to physical problems such as hyperactivity, colic and laminitis.

“We are (it is said) what we eat”, this is probably true in part and there is no reason why the same should not also be true for a horse or pony. It should therefore be of little surprise that certain physical problems are indicated in the gut before they become chronic. The difficulty is that the time between early indication of a risk and the actual manifestation of “the risk” can vary quite markedly. So if you require an evaluation to assess risk then to speed things up please mark the package containing the sample - urgent evaluation -and put any E-Mail address you have on the form. This will mean you getting the results very shortly after we get the dung sample. A worm count is conducted at the same time as a microscopic faecal evaluation as parasitic activity may be exacerbating the problems.
