ADHATODA VASICA
Adhotoda vasica the Malabar nut was first introduced to Europe in 1699. In Sanskrit botany this shrub is named Lion’s Muzzle and Stallion’s Tooth after the shape and colour of its flowers. This bitter-tasting nut has expectorant, diuretic, antispasmodic, alterative, bronchial dilation, antiseptic and pesticidal properties. The leaves of the plant contain the alkaloid vasicine, which is key to bronchial-dilation and its expectorant actions, and stimulates the contraction of uterine muscles, which accelerates or induces labour. Malabar Nut is used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for treating chest problems such as chest congestion and inflammation.
Malabar Nut is useful in treating bronchitis, tuberculosis and other chest conditions.
