Asparagus racemosus
It belongs to the family of Liliaceae. Shatawari means ‚who possesses a hundred husbands™. It is considered both a general tonic and a female reproductive tonic. Shatawari is the main Ayurvedic rejuvenative tonic for the female, as is Withania for the male. Shatawari is however, used for sexual debility and infertility in both sexes. It is also used for menopausal symptoms and to increase lactation.
Used also for prevention and treatment of gastric ulcers, dyspepsia and as a galactogogue. A. racemosus has also been used successfully by some Ayurvedic practitioners for nervous disorders, inflammation, liver diseases and certain infectious diseases.
The roots are bitter, sweet, emollient, cooling, nervine, tonic, constipating, opthalimic, anobyne, aphrodisiac, . They are useful in nervous disorders, dyspepsia, tumours, scalding of urine, throat infections, tuberclosis, cough bronchitis and general debility.
