Ocimum sanctum

Kknown as Tulsi has both medicinal and spiritual significance. Sacred to Lord Vishnu Hindu God of preservation it is considered purifying to mind, body and spirit. Rosaries made from the cut stems are used for meditation. The leaves yield the volatile oil Eugenol which has antibacterial and insecticidal properties. Ocimum sanctum is helpful in the relief of digestive gas and bloating. It is mildly inflammatory the extract being essentially equivalent to a standard dose of aspirin. It is effective for catarrh and bronchitis and when applied to the skin in ringworm and cutaneous diseases. The antioxidant properties of Ocimum sanctum are the key to its effectiveness in dampening down the effects of stress and raising tolerance levels to noise and other physical discomforts. It is of major importance in formulae for Asthma and other respiratory diseases. On test Ocimum sanctum extract was found to increase physical and mental endurance and increases tolerance to physical, chemical, biological and emotional stress superior to that of Eleuthero coccus and Panax ginseng and exhibited a complete inhibition of the growth of all three tested Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains. The aqueous decoction of the whole plant is capable of lowering blood sugar levels and is therefore helpful for diabetes.
