Large tree, young branchlets, leaf buds,
Leaves:- mostly subopposite, distant, ovate, with long, soft, shining,
rust coloured, or silvery hairs.Wither in the cold season.
Flowers:- Dull white or yellowish, with a strong offensive smell. Blossom
in April to May.
Fruits:- Obovoid or ellipsoidal from a broad base, glabrous. Formation in
November to January.
In Ayurvedic medicine It is believed that it can destroy all
diseases and eliminate all waste from the body, and also promote tissue growth
and health. Terminalia Chebula has antibacterial and antioxidant properties. It
is also said to promote wisdom, intellect and eyesight. Terminalia Chebula also
known as Harada, is one of the herbs used in the triphala formula.
It has been used to treat a variety of conditions such as
digestive disorders, urinary infections, diabetes, skin diseases, parasitic
infections, heart diseases, irregular fevers, flatulence, constipation, ulcers,
vomiting, colic pain and haemorrhoids. When taken after meals it prevents
stomach upset. Preliminary studies have shown Terminalia Chebula to be effective
in treating the herpes simplex virus (HSV). Other preliminary studies show
Terminalia Chebula has anti-tumour activity and a considerable effect in
inhibiting the HIV virus.
